AFL 2019: Top Five Suns Players

Which Suns shone brightest in 2019?

5. Touk Miller

Miller is a very important player for the Suns, but he does struggle from time to time to impact the game in meaningful ways. It’s no surprise that when he does though, the Suns are thereabouts. He was sidelined with a heel injury for 3 rounds, but 2019 was arguably his most consistent – his best performance came against Carlton, grabbing 31 disposals, six marks and 13 tackles in one of the Suns’ few wins.

4. Darcy MacPherson

MacPherson shouldered a fair amount of grunt work through the season, and he dug in accordingly; finishing 7th in tackles for the league. He was also ranked 8th for pressure acts and 10th for inside 50 tackles. Defensive pressure is his forte’, although he did have games where he racked up the touches – including 27 disposals, eight tackles and five marks against the dees in round 8.

3. David Swallow

For the second time in his career, Swallow was able to play every game. It was also his most consistent season, averaging 23 disposals, four marks and four tackles per game. Swallow was runner-up in the Suns’ best and fairest. His standout game was at Metricon against Melbourne in round 8; finishing with 35 disposals (22 contested) and 13 clearances. He also did enough to poll 7 brownlow votes.

2. Brayden Fiorini

The 21-year old had a huge task set out for him, and, despite a a slight decrescendo as the season tailed, he was up to it. He averaged 25 disposals and 5 tackles per game, with his standout performance in a round 9 38 point loss to Port, tallying 38 disposals, with 9 inside 50’s and a goal, which also netted him a brownlow vote.

1. Jarrod Witts

Was one of the few shining lights in a season as grim as a party in Josef Fritzl’s basement. As mentioned earlier, he was massive in hit-outs, and was more than handy around the ground. One would think that if Gold Coast’s mids can take the next step, the big fella’s craft will be more prominent in future seasons.
