CWC19: Sri Lanka vs Pakistan – What Does it Mean?

Adrian Meredith explains the consequences of rain preventing Pakistan and Sri Lanka taking the field..

With the match washed out, the one thing to reflect is that both teams now have an extra point, and that point could prove to be crucial. As it stands, they each have three points, with Sri Lanka third and Pakistan fourth, both currently in line for semi-final berths.

It seems ridiculous to suggest that either of these two teams could make the semi-finals, and I am certainly not suggesting that they will on current form but it is notable that in 1992 it was Pakistan’s washout against England that saved them from an early exit. Had rain not fell, Pakistan would have finished sixth and Australia would have been the fourth and final semi-finalist. Pakistan fans will be pointing again to the similarities with 1992, and their dream is very much alive here.
