3. (3) GWS

It will take a lot more for the Giants to rid themselves of the ghosts of their Grand Final capitulation but they took the first step with their impressive victory over the Cats.

5. (6) WEST COAST

The Eagles did what they had to do in depatching Melbourne at Optus Stadium in the last game of the round. With question marks over the quality of their opposition makes it hard to determine just how impressive their performance was.

There might be a few tricks in the old Hawks just yet.

6. (4) GEELONG

Dealt a tough first round opponent to start the season, the Cats came up a little short against the Giants in Sydney. Until they can claim a quality scalp there will be question marks over the Cats credentials.

7. (5) BRISBANE

Tasted defeat for the first time in months when they fell to the Tigers at the MCG in the final round. They don’t have long to wait for the opportunity for revenge though, as they host Richmond in the first week of the finals at the Gabba.

8. (7) WESTERN BULLDOGS

Much was expected from the Bulldogs after a summer spent licking their wounds following their 2019 finals exit which made their capitulation to Collingwood without a yelp all the more disappointing.

9. (10) ESSENDON

Had a scare late but came away with the chocolates against Fremantle. Still a little more required from them to be considered among the competition’s elite.

10. (11) NORTH MELBOURNE

Is there something brewing at Arden Street that we didn’t notice? The Kangaroos second half against the Saints was outstanding and improves their record under Rhyce Shaw to eight wins from 13 games.

12. (13) SYDNEY

The Swans were impressive against the Crows away from home and flagged their intentions to play a more expansive brand of football in 2020.

13. (9) CARLTON

Came back strongly in the second half against Richmond but were well off the pace when the match was on the line early.

14. (14) ST KILDA

With due respect to their opposition in North Melbourne, St Kilda was perhaps the most disappointing team of Round One that isn’t based in Footscray. At 29-points up at half time they should have recorded a comfortable victory, instead they suffered a disappointing defeat.

15. (15) FREMANTLE

The Longmuir Era at Fremantle did not begin with the result they wanted against the Bombers in Melbourne. Still a whole lot for the men in purple to do to earn the respect of the football world.

16. (16) ADELAIDE

Matthew Nicks’ time in charge began with a tough loss against the Swans at home. While they had a chance to steal it late, for a team with a whole to prove this year, it was a worrying way to start the season.

17. (17) MELBOURNE

There unusual circumstances surrounding the Demons clash with the Eagles but it was another below par effort from the men in red and blue. After their season to forget in 2019 it didn’t bode well for a rise up the ladder this year.

After a positive preseason, the Suns were disappointing in their opening round clash with Port Adelaide.
